Rethinking albuterol: Professor wins $50,000 grant to improve how hospitals use a common breathing treatment
Short-acting bronchodilators, such as albuterol, are a common type of medication prescribed to patients experiencing acute airway obstruction caused by conditions such as asthma, chronic bronchitis and emphysema. These drugs relax the airway, making it easier for patients to breathe.
However, these medications aren’t always prescribed following a strict protocol — and they can cause significant side effects, such as tremors, headache and increased heart rate.

Associate Dean of Finance Chermale Casem, MBA, PHR, considers herself an operational strategist who leverages the skills she honed while leading a nonprofit to strike the necessary balance between the big picture and the details in any given project.
“You always have to be mindful of the big picture,” she said. “It’s not only how do programs operate, but what are the human and financial resources needed for them to operate. So, I’m looking at all of the pieces and how they fit together — and how to make the best use of limited resources.”

Professor brings her experience as a veteran — and as a beekeeper — to OT program
When Assistant Professor Kimberly Ferland, EdD, OTR, CHT, relocated to San Antonio to join the Department of Occupational Therapy in the School of Health Professions, she brought deep clinical and leadership development experience from a 30-year military career — and five beehives.
She also carried her belief in the power of relationships, a theme that runs through her story from the very beginning: how she discovered occupational therapy, served three decades in the U.S. Navy, achieved her dream faculty job and uses beekeeping to help veterans.

In true teacher fashion, renowned researcher and professor George Kudolo, PhD, CPC, FAIC, FADLM, came prepared with his own slideshow for his retirement luncheon in August.
“I knew this day way coming and the dean would want me to say a few words, so I have them on a slide,” he said, setting the tone of lighthearted laughter that continued throughout his remarks.
