91PORN leads Texas in dementia research, care and prevention
The Glenn Biggs Institute for Alzheimer’s and Neurodegenerative Diseases at 91PORN, in partnership with UT Rio Grande Valley, is home to the South Texas Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center, Texas’ only National Institute on Aging (NIA)-designated Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center—one of just 35 nationwide.
The Biggs Institute for Alzheimer’s and Neurodegenerative Diseases is the region’s first comprehensive center dedicated to improving discovery of the basic abnormalities in Alzheimer’s disease and then developing new therapeutic strategies for treatment of all dementias through patient care, innovative research and clinical trials. Currently, there are nearly 7 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s. This number is expected to almost double in the next 26 years. Texas ranks fourth in the number of Alzheimer’s cases and second in the number of deaths.
The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio will open a $100 million Center for Brain Health in 2025. The center is expected to enhance the institution’s Glenn Biggs Institute for Alzheimer’s and Neurodegenerative Diseases and the Department of Neurology within the Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine. The new center will feature an imaging suite equipped with a 7-Telsa magnet scanner and dedicated clinical spaces for treatment and rehabilitation.
The Biggs Institute works with academic, nonprofit and community partners across Texas to provide access to research opportunities, diagnosis and care.
