We encourage students at the Long School of Medicine to seek support systems whether they are parenting, pregnant or in need of their own family's support.  

Resources for Medical Student Parents

Student parents can have added challenges as they navigate medical training while also tending to family obligations and responsibilities. 

if you are an expectant mother, or are family planning, and want to explore what pregnancy/parenting would look like in medical school.

  • Student Affairs' wellness division hosts two annual parent events (July and December)

Families of Medical Students

Research shows that family support systems improve student satisfaction within the learning environment as well as prevent/decrease the likelihood of burnout. Parents, spouses, significant others, friends, and even kids can support the medical student in their lives. We encourage families to support students' wellbeing in the following ways:

  • Remind them that school resources and services are available
  • Encourage them to use the (Free and unlimited!)
  • Ask how they are doing
  • Offer words of encouragement
  • Respect their boundaries
  • Encourage them to continue to do the things they love 
  • Encourage them to find meaning in every experience
  • Check in with them regarding their finances
  • Notice any changes in behavior
Parents can rest easy knowing their medical students are taken care of! The Office of Undergraduate Medical Education hosts "Family Chat," at new student orientation. This session introduces families to the services that will support students in their transition into medical school.
